# Canva Brand Kit Builder

Build a complete, ready-to-use Canva Brand Kit from a short brief: color palette with hex codes, font hierarchy, logo usage rules, photography direction, voice guidelines, and a starter set of published brand templates. It is built for agencies onboarding new clients in a single sitting and for founders who need a consistent identity before they start shipping posts, decks, and one-pagers.

## When to use it

- A new client signs and you need brand assets, a palette, and template scaffolding in Canva before the first deliverable.
- You have a logo and a couple of brand colors but no fonts, no usage rules, and no reusable templates.
- You want every social post, story, deck, and business card to pull from the same palette and type system instead of being rebuilt each time.

## What it does

The skill drives Canva through the Canva Connect MCP tools. It first calls `list-brand-kits` (requires the `brandkit:read` scope) to see what already exists so it won't duplicate. It generates designs with `generate-design` / `generate-design-structured`, pointing them at your brand kit so colors and fonts are applied automatically. Logos and reference imagery are brought in with `upload-asset-from-url`.

For each starter template (Instagram post, story, presentation, business card) it produces a design, then promotes it to a reusable, org-wide template via `publish-brand-template` (requires `brandtemplate:content:write`). To make templates autofillable, it creates an editable copy with `create-brand-template-draft`, opens an editing session with `start-editing-transaction`, tags slots like `logo` and `email` using `perform-editing-operations` with `autofill_field_label`, then `commit-editing-transaction` and re-publishes. Final assets are pulled with `export-design`.

## Usage example

```
curl -fsSL --create-dirs -o ~/.claude/skills/canva-brand-kit/SKILL.md https://claudeskil.com/skills/canva-brand-kit/SKILL.md
> Build a brand kit for "Northwind Coffee" — palette in warm
  earth tones, modern sans for headings, logo at
  https://cdn.northwind.co/logo.svg. Include post, story,
  deck, and business-card templates.
```

The skill checks existing kits, uploads the logo, generates each design against the kit, tags autofill slots, and publishes the four templates back to your Canva organization.

## Tips & gotchas

- If a tool returns `Missing scopes: [brandkit:read]` or `[brandtemplate:content:write]`, disconnect and reconnect the Canva connector — the new token will carry the added scope.
- Brand color and font definitions are set inside Canva's brand kit UI; the skill applies an existing kit to designs rather than mutating the kit's swatches programmatically. Confirm the kit ID before generating.
- Published brand templates are org-wide. Use a clear naming convention (e.g. `Northwind / Post`) so they're findable via `search-brand-templates`.
- Tag autofill slots before publishing — adding them afterward means re-drafting and re-publishing each template.

## FAQ

**Does this work on a free Canva plan?** Brand kits and brand templates require a Canva Pro or Teams plan; on free plans the skill can still generate and export individual designs.

**Can it edit an existing kit instead of starting fresh?** Yes. It lists current kits first and will generate templates against a kit you already have rather than creating a parallel one.

**Where do the final files go?** Templates live in your Canva organization; flat exports (PNG/PDF) come back through `export-design` for handoff.
